X Ray Diffraction In Benzene

Our X-ray diffraction (XRD) laboratory instruments reveal structural information such as chemical composition, crystal structure and more. The whereabouts of benzene molecules adsorbed at two loadings in zeolite ZSM-5 at room temperature have been studied with powder neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The structures have been refined by the Rietveld method in space group Pnma by fitting simultaneously to the X-ray and neutron data. With approximately 3.4 molecules per unit cell, the best agreement is obtained with a model which has two molecules in mutually exclusive positions in the intersection of the straight. The Debye method for the determination of interatomic distances in single molecules is applied to ortho and paradichlorbenzene. Results with monochlorbenzene are used to correct the scattering curves so as to isolate the Cl-Cl scattering. The resulting Cl-Cl curves show good agreement with theoretical curves constructed for distances of 3.0 and 6.25A, respectively. The measurements indicate a plane hexagonal benzene molecule with the chlorine atoms lying in or near the plane.
