Once you have downloaded and installed VMware Workstation Player you should see the below when running the application for the first time. We’re nearly ready to import the GNS3 VM to VMware, however firstly I want you to go back to the VMware site and download the VIX drivers, this is needed to properly integrate the API with GNS3. Install VMware VIX 1.17.0; Add the following lines to C:Program Files (x86)VMwareVMware VIXvixwrapper-config.txt for compatibility with VMware Player 15.5 # Player 15.5 player 19 vmdb 15.5.0 Workstation-14.0.0; Launch Setup Wizard within GNS3, enabling GNS3 VM running in VMware Player 15.5; Notice that GNS3 VM fails to get launched by GNS3.

I’ve been using GNS3 when playing around with smaller topologies instead of booting up my R610 which is more or less like working next to a jet plane, but had a few issues getting it up and running on a new Win10-installation so figured I should document my steps for future reference.

Start with downloading:

You will also need the following bin-files:

Vmware Vix Download

Vmware
  • i86bi-linux-l2-adventerprisek9-15.2d.bin
  • i86bi-linux-l3-adventerprisek9-15.4.1T.bin

Install everything as normal, follow the official GNS3-guide if there’s any questions. I started with VMware & VIX, imported the GNS3 VM, adjusted memory to at least 4GB RAM and added an extra bridge adapter so we can reach our topology from other devices on our network.

After installing GNS3 I had some strange issues that the program was unable to connect to the VM for some reason. The error-code I got was:

Error while saving settings: GNS3VM: Error while executing VMware command: vmrun has returned an error: Unable to connect to host.
Error: The specified version was not found

I found some old post recommending to downgrade the version of VMware station to 12.xx but a better fix I found was instead to edit the following file (depending on where you installed it):
C:Program Files (x86)VMwareVMware VIXvixwrapper-config.txt

Edit the following line:

Restart WMware & GNS3 and you should be good to go. Import the IOU-appliances as normal, if you put the required .bin-files in the same folder it should find them automatically. Last step is to enter your license or GNS3 will refuse to start them, if you’re unsure how to get hold of this contact Cisco or do some googling.

There has been multiple query regarding the integration of GNS3 with VMWare , the goal of this Post is to help to get the users know the easy steps to integrate GNS3 with VM . This will not only help the user to practice CCNA,CCNP lab in GNS but also work with with network automation scenarios.

Lets start with downloading the GNS3 and corresponding GNS3 VM from GNS site.

Now you need to install VMWare Player , download the Vmware workstation Player 12 which i found to be compatible with GNS3 .The last item to download is VIX API , so in total we have downloaded 4 items as mentioned below with required links:

Vmware Vix Gns3

1)GNS3 èhttps://www.gns3.com/software

2) GNS3 VM(.ovo file)èhttps://www.gns3.com/software

3)Vmware workstation Player èhttps://filehippo.com/download_vmware-workstation-pro/68880/

Once VM Player is downloaded , need to open the GNS3 VM .ovo file and import it.

Once VM is detected , you can see the configured details as below

We have now 2 servers present on GNS3, one is local and another is GNS3 VM, so we can use IOS images locally or on VM.
