Harmonicas are the most inexpensive and versatile instrument for those of us without musical ability or talent. If they sit in the drawer, you're not out a whole lot. Once you learn to play the harmonica, it can be pleasant.

Harmonicas are promoted as easy to play. That's not quite true. Learning something you haven't done before is never easy. It takes practice, 'tabs', practice, notes, practice, timing, practice and more practice. And practice is the hardest - doing it on a regular basis.

Harmonica books are not all that helpful. They assume allot. Most of the instruction is in 'bending', 'overblowing' and 'cross' harp playing - all related to blues and jazz. I'd be satisfied just to get a recognizable tune out of it! The introductory booklet that comes with most Hohner Harmonicas is actually quite good, carefully study it.

Reading music is not necessary to play a harmonica. Harmonica tablature, 'tabs', indicates which hole, 1 to 10, to blow or draw through. So, follow the numbers, work on the timing a bit, and fairly soon the tune will be recognizable. You will also soon realize that you should be exercising more - you, not the harmonica - 10 draw notes in a row are the worst!
